What is Technical Textile

In the world of architecture and design the need for durable and innovative materials remain constant. Textiles are flexible materials that can be applied in architectural spaces in many ways. What makes technical textiles special is that they can be applied and used in areas where normal textiles can't be used efficiently.

At Materials Assemble, we understand the need for innovative and sustainable materials that have high resistant qualities. This article explains what technical textiles are and how as Materials Assemble we make it accessible for architects and designers.

What is Technical Textile?

Technical textiles are composite materials that have high technical performances, such as durability, resistance, strength, thermal and acoustic qualities. They can be used for decorative elements, canopies, partitions walls, curtains and many more applications in architecture and design. Their flexibility differs from typical hard wearing products and their resistance separates them from typical textiles products.

Raw Materials

In the realm of technical textiles, the raw materials employed are diverse, encompassing both natural and man-made resources. A prime example is the utilisation of natural fibres, such as glass fibres. These fibres not only exhibit exceptional durability but also contribute to the sustainability of the final textile product. The incorporation of natural fibres imparts unique characteristics to the textile, providing it with a natural pigment that enhances both aesthetic appeal and functionality. At Materials Assemble, our technical textiles are made from 4 natural and 2 man-made fibres. The minerals in these materials give the fibre it's natural pigment.

What differentiates normal and technical textiles?

The divergence between conventional and technical fabrics is marked by a multitude of factors. Unlike normal textiles, technical textiles boast a robustness that surpasses traditional counterparts, making them more resilient to wear and tear. What sets technical textiles apart is their versatile nature, often functioning as composites or featuring innovative designs that serve specific purposes. Technical textiles can seamlessly integrate into various environments, particularly excelling in outdoor applications where durability and specialised functionalities shine. While technical textiles are renowned for their sturdiness, they also retain the adaptability inherit in normal textiles. This unique blend of strength and flexibility positions technical textiles as dynamic solutions catering to a spectrum of needs, from industrial applications to outdoor adventures, showcasing their prowess in bridging the gap between conventional and cutting-edge textile technologies.

Applications in Architecture

Technical textiles have revolutionised the landscape of architectural applications, offering a versatile and innovative solution to various design challenges. One of the remarkable features that sets the technical textiles apart is their ability to reflect UV light and heat effectively, serving as a protective shield against excessive sunlight. This unique property makes them an ideal choice for architectural designs where managing sunlight exposure is crucial. What distinguishes technical textiles further is their breathable nature, allowing air and wind to permeate through the fabric. This breathability not only enhances comfort but also makes technical textiles particularly well-suited for outdoor applications. Architects can leverage these textiles to create dynamic and functional spaces that strike a delicate balance between protection and openness.

Applications in Art and Design

In the realm of art, technical textiles become a compelling medium for expression. Artist are increasingly integrating these textiles into their creations, pushing the boundaries of  conventional artistry. The inherit strength and flexibility of technical textiles allow for the formation of intricate and unconventional pieces of work.

Fashion, too, has embraced the versatility of technical textiles. Beyond their functional attributes, these textiles have become a fascinating choice for outwear, offering a marriage of durability and style. The interplay of innovative textures and the adaptability of technical textiles provide fashion designer with a canvas to craft avant-garde pieces that blend form and function.

The unique properties of technical textiles also come to the front with lighting installations. The fibrous composition of these textiles interacts harmoniously with light, offering a dynamic medium for creating captivating and ambient illuminations. This symbiosis between textile and light opens up new avenues for innovative and visually stunning designs, enabling artist and designers to work with the interplay of textures and luminosity.

At Materials Assemble, we recognise the pivotal role of enhancing spatial experiences in architectural endeavours. With a dedicated focus on pioneering solutions, we  introduce a diverse range of customisable technical textiles. Our technical textiles stand out as dynamic materials, allowing customisation in terms of size, texture, colour, and finish. Whether enveloping exterior facades to regulate light and enhance climate control, or gracing interiors to introduce a tactile dimension, our customisable technical textiles provide a flexible and visually appealing solution.
