What is Mycelium?

Mycelium is a natural wonder, defined as the vegetative part of a fungus or fungus-like bacterial colony, composed of branching, thread-like hyphae. This fascinating organism is found in soil and many other substrates, including fairy ring fungi, where it is sometimes referred to as shiro. As a material for environmentally responsible interior design products, mycelium boasts impressive technical properties and a unique, innovative aesthetic. Mogu, a leading innovator in mycelium-based products, hopes to raise awareness of the value, processes, and life cycle of materials in our daily lives by offering new experiences. Mogu envisions homes, offices, and other environments that embrace nature's radical character, promoting a more honest and virtuous relationship with the ecosystem we inhabit. Using low-value organic materials, the production process transforms them into a high-value product with distinctive aesthetics through the power of mycelium. Discover the limitless possibilities of mycelium and experience its transformative potential for sustainable living.

Mycelium: from fungus to interior finish

Mycelium is an eco-friendly and innovative material, it's proof that Nature is the best designer.
When using mycelium technology we can create a range of interior finishing products made from naturally cultivated materials or furniture that represent an unique alternative to materials traditionally produced from fossil fuel derivatives.
The production process starts from low-value materials, which cannot find any other valuable application in the industry. By feeding on the organic matter, the mycelium converts the low-value input matter into a product with high added value, characterised by unique aesthetic

Growing Mycelium

Mogu's cutting-edge production process involves growing carefully chosen strains of mycelium on predesigned substrates created from agro-industrial residues. By fine-tuning the matrix configuration, they are able to harvest a diverse range of materials within short timeframes and with minimal resource use. The fungal mycelium reinforces the matrix structure, creating a 100% plastic-free and cohesive composite material. To minimize energy consumption, Mogu slowly dries the mycelium materials at the end of the production process, rendering them inert. The resulting products are not only stable, safe, and durable but also fully biodegradable, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Discover the innovative and sustainable potential of mycelium-based materials and experience a new era of responsible living.

Circular Process

The mycelium converts the low-value input matters into products with high added value, advanced technical features and unique aesthetics.

Bio-based

The material is produced by growing selected strains of mycelium on pre-engineered substrates made of agro-industrial residues.

Biodegradable

Mycelium materials will biodegrade only if the correct industrial conditions are provided, once disposed at the end of their life cycle.

Safe

Mycelium products employs non-GMO, non-allergenic fungal strains, which do not release any spores throughout the whole production process.
